Ernst Prost wirkt nach dem Verkauf an Würth entspannt, sagt aber: „Ich schaffe eher noch mehr als früher.“

Im SWP-Interview spricht Ernst Prost über den Firmenverkauf, Siegesprämien und seine Liebe zur einer Harley Davidson.
Ernst Prost hat das Unternehmen Liqui Moly in Ulm-Lehr zu internationaler Größe geführt. Zuletzt überraschte der 61-Jährige mit der Ankündigung, seinen Mitarbeitern erneut 11.000 Euro Prämie zu zahlen. Zum Jahresanfang hatte er seine Firmenanteile an Schraubenhersteller Reinhold Würth verkauft, der zuvor 20 Jahre stiller Teilhaber bei Liqui Moly war. Prost führt nun als Angestellter die Geschäfte weiter.
Die ersten Dieselfahrverbote werden schon für April in deutschen Städten erwartet. Was bedeutet das für einen Motoröl- und Additivhersteller wie Liqui Moly?
ERNST PROST: Ich kann das Thema nicht beeinflussen. So etwas kommt wie ein Schlechtwettergebiet herangerauscht. Die Diesel-Debatte ist da nichts anderes als eine Währungsturbulenz oder ein Wirtschaftsembargo. Da kannst du nichts dran ändern. Das Gute bei Liqui Moly ist, dass wir die flexible Struktur eines Mittelständlers haben, mit einer flachen Kommandostruktur. Wir sind weniger von politischen Debatten abhängig als davon, ob der Rohölpreis sinkt oder steigt. Das Wichtigste ist: Wir reagieren schnell, aber nicht hektisch.Welche Anstrengungen unternehmen Sie, um die Firma zu diversifizieren, also um sich im Markt breiter aufzustellen?
Unsere Devise lautet „Never lay all your eggs in one basket“, also sinngemäß: Setz’ nicht alles auf eine Karte. Wir wollen das so genannte Klumpenrisiko meiden, also uns nicht nur von einem Kunden, einer Bank, einem Lieferanten, einem Produkt abhängig machen. Deshalb sind wir auch in vielen Ländern tätig, von Afghanistan über den Senegal bis zu den USA. Niemand hat einen Umsatzanteil, der höher als fünf Prozent ist.Also sind Sie für die Zukunft breit aufgestellt?
Nur ein Beispiel: Wir engagieren uns derzeit stärker auf dem Markt für Bootsmotoren. Wenn Sie etwa die Marina sehen, die vor den Malediven liegt, wissen Sie, dass es ein wichtiger Zukunftsmarkt ist. Aber genauso versorgen wir die thailändischen Moped-Fahrer mit „Zweitakt-Shooter“, wie es in Bangkok heißt. Und natürlich ist auch Bremsflüssigkeit für E-Bikes für uns ein Thema. Gerade haben wir von Rudolf Scharping das Label „Kompetenzpartner“ seines Bundes Deutscher Radfahrer verliehen bekommen.Wobei Sie ja lieber auf einer Harley Davidson Platz nehmen.
Ja, ich habe zuhause in Leipheim eine Replica der Harley aus dem Film „Easy Rider“ in der Garage stehen, so richtig mit Tropfentank und hohem Lenker.Kurz zur Politik. Noch vor dem Zustandekommen der Groko haben Sie gesagt: Wäre Deutschland mein Unternehmen, ich hätte eine Liste mit 100 Punkten, an die ich rangehen würde. Haben CDU/CSU und SPD nun wenigstens ein paar kritische Punkte abgeräumt?
Erstmal haben die Koalitionspartner 100-mal „Wir wollen“ gesagt. Nun kommt es darauf an, was konkret getan wird. Ein Ärgernis ist beispielsweise der aus meiner Sicht viel zu niedrige Mindestlohn, nicht zuletzt in überlebenswichtigen Bereichen wie der Pflege. Ich sehe das so: Unsere Mitarbeiter haben mich reich gemacht, für mich sind es Mit-Unternehmer. Sie müssen sich für den Erfolg richtig reinknien, aber sie sollen am Gewinn auch teilhaben. Da reicht es nicht, Brosamen zu verteilen, deshalb hat jeder meiner 835 Leute mit dem letzten Gehalt 11.000 Euro überwiesen bekommen. Auch die Mitarbeiter in Südafrika, die nutzen das für größere Investitionen oder um Schulden abzuzahlen.Und die Lehrlinge?
Die bekommen jeder 3300 Euro, schließlich haben die auch ihren Anteil am Erfolg. Ebenso die knapp 30 Leiharbeiter, die uns helfen, Leistungsspitzen abzupuffern und Krankheitsphasen zu überbrücken. Jeden dritten Leiharbeiter übernehmen wir im Schnitt, schließlich haben die das Unternehmen kennengelernt und wissen, wie wir ticken.Sie haben zuletzt beim Umsatz die 500-Millionen-Grenze überschritten, eine fast zweistellige Rendite erzielt und angesichts der guten Zahlen erneut die hohen Prämien ausgeschüttet. Findet Ihr neuer Alleineigentümer Würth diese Großzügigkeit eigentlich gut?
Die finden das auch gut. Ich denke da wie Reinhold Würth. Wir haben zutiefst die gleiche Ausrichtung und Unternehmenskultur. Es macht doch keinen Sinn, noch mehr Geld zu haben. Man sollte besser etwas zurückgeben. Auch deshalb ist Liqui Moly so erfolgreich. Außerdem sind wir die Ertrags-Stars innerhalb der Würth-Gruppe. Es wäre doch bekloppt, wenn man das alles ändern würde.Sie haben Ihre Anteile zum Jahreswechsel vollends an den Weltkonzern in Künzelsau veräußert. Wollen Sie erläutern, wie die Verbindung zu Würth zustande kam?
Entscheidend ist die Zukunft für die Firma, auch nach meiner Zeit. Deshalb gibt es mit Günter Hiermaier auch einen zweiten Geschäftsführer, der war schon mein Lehrling bei Sonax, und wir sind dicke Freunde. Diese Sicherheitsarchitektur mit Würth haben wir schon vor 20 Jahren gewählt. Es gab während dieser Zeit auch Put- und Pull-Optionen, so dass Würth auch im Falle meines überraschenden Todes alle Anteile hätte übernehmen können. Das alles ist im Sinne eines gesicherten Fortbestands der Firma und Arbeitsplätze. Ich bin so betrachtet von einer großen Sorge befreit und schaffe noch mehr als früher.Also sind Sie mit sich im Reinen?
Ich fühle mich jeden Tag wohler, dass mein Lebenswerk in guten Händen liegt. Es gibt andere Unternehmer, die den Zeitpunkt verpassen, um ihre Firma an die nächste Generation weiterzureichen.Die Konstruktion der Firmenbeteiligung war für Außenstehende nicht erkennbar, warum?
Für jede Entscheidung gibt es den richtigen Zeitpunkt. Ich fühle mich nun auch befreit von einer Last. Egal, was kommt, das Unternehmen ist in sicheren Händen, und zwar bei einem deutschen Familien-Unternehmen und nicht irgendeinem Private-Equity-Laden.Sie legen großen Wert auf Marketing. Sind Sie denn ein guter Verkäufer der Marke Liqui Moly oder der Marke Ernst Prost?
Beides. Klar, ich bin in den letzten Jahren immer stärker in den Vordergrund getreten – und auch mal wieder zurück. Marketing ist für Liqui Moly immens wichtig, wir geben rund 20 Millionen Euro im Jahr dafür aus, dazu nochmal knapp sieben Millionen für Forschung und Entwicklung, denn nur Qualität hilft auf lange Sicht wirklich weiter.Welche Impulse können Sie denn Liqui Moly geben? Wie lange werden Sie nach ihrem 61. Geburtstag noch an der Spitze des Unternehmens stehen?
Wir werden wie in den vergangenen 25 Jahren kreativ bleiben. Wenn je im Zuge der Elektromobilität weniger Motoröle gebraucht werden, dann werden wir uns neu erfinden und das Sortiment umbauen. Auch in Form einer „Line Extension“, also Ausweitung bestehender Produkte, für Reinigen, Konservieren, Pflegen und Werte erhalten. Überall, wo Reibung passiert, braucht man Schmierstoff. Auch dreckig wird immer irgendwas, was man mit unseren Sachen reinigen kann.Wie wollen Sie das alles eigentlich anstellen?
Wir werden flexibel, anpassungsfähig und schnell bleiben. Da brauchen wir keinen Impuls von außen, das hat der Laden drauf, das liegt bei uns in den Genen. Unsere Ölfabrik Meguin im Saarland ist schließlich auch schon 160 Jahre alt und hat mal mit Schmierfett für Kutschen angefangen.Sie haben mit Ihren Stiftungen bereits ein neues Betätigungsfeld aufgebaut und nach dem Verkauf des Unternehmens weitere vier Millionen eingebracht. Wie soll es hier weitergehen – auch angesichts fehlender Zinsen auf das Stiftungskapital?
Ich habe der vor acht Jahren gegründeten Ernst-Prost-Stiftung jüngst drei Millionen Euro überwiesen, meiner Afrika-Stiftung eine Million. Das sind keine Zustiftungen, sondern das Geld steht für Spenden bereit. Für mich ist es sehr wichtig, diese Aktivitäten zu unterstützen. Meinen Mit-Unternehmern übrigens auch, gerade erst hat mein Team gesammelt. In einem grünen Sparschwein stecken 850 Euro für die Stiftung. Solche Sparschweine bekomme ich fast jeden Tag.Eine weitere Aktivität außerhalb des eigentlichen Kerngeschäfts ist das Sportsponsoring. Auf diesem Feld wartet Liqui Moly immer mit Überraschungen auf, beispielsweise auch dem Engagement im Wintersport.
Das Sportsponsoring gehört zu unserem Geschäft und ist nichts anderes als eine Art der Werbung. Wir gehen halt dahin, wo wir die Aufmerksamkeit bekommen. Und in Deutschland ist das nunmal auch Skispringen, Eishockey, Basketball oder Fußball. Kann aber sein, dass das in einem anderen Markt Auto- oder Kamelrennen sind. Der Köder muss dem Fisch schmecken und nicht dem Angler.Sie sind gelernter Kfz-Mechaniker. Könnten Sie heute noch ein Auto reparieren?
Freilich, das bekomme ich noch hin.
