Hallo von Schweden - Ich schreibe in English und hoffe das ist in Ordnung ...? Ich habe einige Fragen zum Thema Castrol öle...und mein Deutsch ist leider nicht so gut...
My wife had her BMW 118 i Steptronic (petrol) F40 , MY 2020 Engine B38A15 , 103kW 3 cylinder in for service today at the local BMW Serviceprovider. Tacho is at 490000 km and the car is 3 1/2 years old.
Filters has been changed ( oil , mictrofilter coupé , airfilter engine ) spark plugs and engine oil of course. I had expected change of brake fluid also but :Nope
Anyhow now to my question: Engine was filled with Castrol GTX 5W-30 C3 4.5 liters.
In my mind the Castrol GTX is an engine oil which has been around for many years... I thought the Castrol Edge was the newest and most " modern " formula in the Castrol family??? .. but when checking
I see that Castrol GTX has API SP and Castrol Edge has SN Plus.... so I assume I am wrong. But aside from that, what made me curious is that the specifications of these two Castrol oils from different families seems to be very close - the only " notable difference" I can see is perhaps the FlashPoint 196 C for the GTX and 210 C for the Edge ? So the first questions is : Can someone explain the differences between these two oils ?
Both are ACEA C3 , BMW LL 04 , MB approvals 229.31,229.51 and 229.52
Further to that the GTX has ; Porsche approval C 30 and VW 50400/50700 and Renault RN 0700/0710 plus Opel OV 040 1547/ D30 OV 040 1547-G30
So in that sense the GTX seems like a more " modern " or up to date oil - which is contrary to what I thought as GTX has been around for so long.
My second question is : I would have expected BMW to fill an oil meeting the BMW Long Life 17 FE ? But no....BMW LL04 was filled.
And finally ; NO: the engine oil will NOT stay 3 years or some 350000 km in the car as the service-indicator now indicates today.
The costs for the service was 640 Euro if someone is interested... not cheap
Thanks in advance for all inputs to my questions and I hope they are not " too stupid "
Best regards
Bjorn
